TL;DR: The birthday event has a new way to play. Your team can now claim images and videos across the site. Stick your team's hats on them for free, and when your team has the most people on one, the earliest few of you earn points from it. Join Hat Turf, then go claim some turf.
Get your turf hats
Not playing? Nothing changes for you. If you haven't joined, you won't see any hats, badges or counts, on your images or anyone else's. If you'd still rather nobody plays on your images, turn off Let people play Hat Turf on my images. It's a bit like yelling at kids to get off your lawn, except the kids are invisible.
Here it is in a minute, made by @Coo1er_, whose video won our launch-video Crucible. Thank you to everyone who entered. There were lots of really good entries, and we picked this one because it scored the most points across all three Crucibles.
Why turf
Hats were round one. So far the birthday event has been about your own work: put a hat on it, and the attention it gets scores for your team. Great if you post. Plenty of you don't post much. You browse, you react, you know a good image when you see one.
So now you can play with everyone else's work too. Spot something good, stick your team's hat on it, and get your teammates to pile on.
Same rule as the rest of the event: attention scores, Buzz doesn't.
How it works
Step 1. Join Hat Turf. Tap Join on any image, or on the event page. You need to be on a team, so join one first if you haven't. Playing goes both ways: while you're in, your own images are in too.
Step 2. Place your turf hat. Tap the hat button on any image or video, or right from the feed. Drag it where you want it, then save. It costs no Buzz. Every design earns the same, so the free Party Cap you got for joining works just as well.
Step 3. Claim the image. The team with the most people on an image leads it. While your team leads, the earliest few of you earn points from it, just like a hat on your own work: views, reactions, comments, stickers and remixes, with the same point values and fairness rules as the rest of the event. Turf points count for the hat you placed. The number who earn goes up during the event. Accounts made before the event started earn right away; newer accounts start earning once they reach the Spark rank on their Creator Journey.
The rules
One turf hat per person per image. Make it count. Once it's on, it stays: no moving it, and no refund.
All images and videos. Anything in a visible post. Not models, articles or contest entries.
Most people wins. One turf hat each means nobody can carry an image alone. Bring your team.
Ties go to whoever got there first.
King of the hill. If another team takes the lead, they earn from then on. What your team already earned stays.
Regular stickers are unchanged. Stickers and remixes still cost what the owner set, and the owner still gets that Buzz.
A worn hat mutes turf. If the owner is wearing a hat on an image, turf hats can still go on, but they don't earn until it comes off.
Your own views don't count. Same as your own work.
Defend your own images
Your own images and videos are fair game, so claim them first. Place a turf hat on your own image and it starts out as your team's turf. One player from another team can't flip it alone. While your team leads, your turf hat earns like anyone else's. A hat you're wearing on that image mutes yours too.
Your turf hat supply
Your supply doesn't depend on how many hats you own. Fresh turf hats come in every hour, and you can save some up, so a day away doesn't cost you much. Teams that are behind get them faster and can hold more, teams that are ahead get fewer, and that pull gets stronger as the month goes on. That's catch-up balancing, the same trick Mario Kart uses to keep a race close. Your supply also grows during the event. Once you've joined a team, the event page shows how fast you refill, how many you can hold, and how many people earn on each image.
See who owns what
Every image and video in Hat Turf shows a turf badge, on the image page and in the feeds. It updates live, so you can watch a fight happen.

Don't want hats all over the pictures? Turn off Show hats in the Hat Turf panel on an image. You still play: the badge and numbers stay. It's set per device.
Thank you
Four years in, you're still the ones finding the best images on this site. Now you get to plant a flag on them.
Grab some hats. Find a good image. Claim it.
FAQ
Can I keep Hat Turf off my images?
Yes. Turn off Let people play Hat Turf on my images. The turf hats on your images are hidden and stop counting, and come back if you turn it on again. Playing goes both ways, so you can't place turf hats while it's off.
Can I leave Hat Turf?
Yes, from the Hat Turf section of the event page. Turf hats you already placed keep counting. You stop seeing hats and can't place new ones.
Does a turf hat on my image take anything from me?
No. You don't earn or lose anything from other people's turf on your images. Want to earn from your own image? Place a turf hat on it yourself.
Why isn't my turf earning?
Your team may not be leading, you may not be among the earliest few (you still count toward your team's lead), or the owner may be wearing a hat. Newer accounts also need the Spark rank first.
